When Yahoo, Inc. (YHOO) announced its BOSS Custom search engine, I was pretty excited to see how it might improve on the limited (reverse chronological only)…

…search results of the default WordPress search engine. Unfortunately, after heading to the sign-up page, I was greeted with a “invite-only program” slap on the hands.

OK, I thought. If Yahoo, Inc. (YHOO) BOSS is not available to the regular “Joe Blogger” lets find a solution that is. I’ve had to call a few clients to proactively talk them off a ledge and I thought that perhaps I’d do well to post some recent going’s on at Google, Inc. (Goog) up on the blog for everyone. There is an update underway over at chez Google, Inc. (Goog). There appear to be at least 3 sets of data going around and a simple Refresh can provide different results for the same search depending on the datacenter you happen to hit.

In general the differences appear to be minor however I have seen a few cases where a site that is in the top 10 on one isn’t in the top 30 on another.

This updates seems to be a little more major that we’ve seen in a while. I haven’t had time to analyze what’s going on yet and honestly - I’ll probably wait until later in the weekend when things start to stabilize before I look into it too much (why try to study a moving target when you can wait for it to rest?) If there’s anything interesting to note after the update has settled you can be sure I’ll be writing about it here.

A new article from MediaPost outlines the strength of the big threes ad networks”even in the face of a struggling economy. According to a report by…

…AdGooroo, Google, Inc. (Goog) grew their advertiser count by nearly 55% when compared to the fourth quarter of 2007. Microsofts share of advertisers grew by nearly 12%. Yahoos numbers were not given although the author did indicate they had the worst performance of all advertisers when compared year over year.

AdGooroo CEO Rich Stokes went so far as to suggest the fourth quarter of this year may be the strongest on record for both Google, Inc. (Goog) & Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and that Google, Inc. (Goog) has increased advertiser levels back to those seen in January of 2008.

When Google, Inc. (Goog) was contending with layoff rumors and a sell rating from Wall Street analysts it looked like the Internet giant might be on the verge of trouble. If these numbers continue they may be on the road back to dominance.

As we draw closer to the end of 2008, the forums are alive with discussions on what could be the last shuffle of the Google, Inc. (Goog) SERPs for the year.

Our trusty webmasterworld forums have mixed reports coming out regarding Google, Inc. (Goog) SERP observations. Some webmasters feel that it’s all fairly quiet post the Thanksgiving day weekend, while others are reporting the activity as “crazy”.

One of the forum members has noted dramatic fluctuations in ranking. Some of his newer sites are moving from outside the first 1000 results, up to top 10 positions for just 12 hours, and then back outside the top 1000, then back up again.

“looks like they’re playing with the strength of the bond between index and inner pages again to me”

“My site is 6 months old and is starting to show up in the top 20. When I check the Google, Inc. (Goog) dance tool in most data centers it shows top 10 for 2 keywords and bouncing around this month.”

“I’ve been pinned to #1 for my niche for a long time. Recently I yo-yo’ed but then settled down to #2 on my main term but was still number 1 on the secondary stuff. Now I’m seeing my slipping to #2 on secondary terms as well.”

Another sign that Google, Inc. (Goog) is very much concerned about the current economic conditions. Both the Raleigh News and Observer and the Triangle Business Journal…

…are reporting that the search engine giant has told state officials it wont be taking a $4.7 million grant after all.

The grant was supposed to be an incentive for Google, Inc. (Goog) to create 210 jobs and spend $600 million over four years”all at its new data center in Lenoir, NC. However, Google, Inc. (Goog) has thus far only hired 50 employees and has all but stopped the expansion of its data center in Lenoir.

While Google, Inc. (Goog) states it didnt like all of the terms of the grant agreement it also cited “recent volatile economic” in a letter to state officials.

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but isnt the purpose of these new data centers to support Googles growth in its core offering”search? If Googles not willing to continue spending at the same pace on search, does this suggest that Googles search growth is slowing?

Its one thing to shut down Lively.com, but a little more concerning to slow down your data center growth.

More control has been given in the Googlebot’s crawl rate setting in the Webmaster Tools to enable all the webmasters to specify their problems in a better way!

This would further enable the team of Webmasters Tools to go for a perfect elaboration of the matter in precise.

Googlebot employs sophisticated algorithms that determine how much to crawl each site it visits. For a vast majority of sites, it’s probably best to choose the “Let Google, Inc. (Goog) determine my crawl rate” option, which is the default. However, if you’re an advanced user or if you’re facing bandwidth issues with your server, you can customize your crawl rate to the speed most optimal for your web server(s). The custom crawl rate option allows you to provide Googlebot insight to the maximum number of requests per second and the number of seconds between requests that you feel are best for your environment.

Googlebot determines the range of crawl rate values you’ll have available in Webmaster Tools. This is based on our understanding of your server’s capabilities. This range may vary from one site to another and across time based on several factors. However, setting it to higher value than the default won’t improve your coverage or ranking.
