Dotless Domain - Google Discusses ‘404 ‘response!

October 6th, 2008

At the Google, Inc. (Goog) Webmaster Central Blog, Maile Ohye has put up a post that specifically talks about the response code 404. According to Maile, Response codes are a numeric status…

(like 200 for “OK”, 301 for “Moved Permanently”) that a webserver returns in response to a request for a URL. The 404 response code should be returned for a file ‘Not Found’.”

Whenever a users puts in the URL of your website, the webserver that is hosting your website searches for the corresponding file for the URL. When it finds the file, the server responds with a 200 response code, along with the most frequent message, such as the HTML.

Google, Inc. (Goog) defines response code 404, stating that, Let’s say that in the link to “Visit Google, Inc. (Goog) Apps” above, the link is broken because of a typing error when coding the page. Now when a user clicks “Visit Google, Inc. (Goog) Apps”, the particular webpage/file isn’t located by the webserver. The webserver should return a 404 response code, meaning ‘Not Found’.

Furthermore, Google, Inc. (Goog) states that this is only the start of a week long process of understanding and avoiding response code 404 and more would be posted shortly.

Dotlessdomain.com - Advanced Link Building And Pagerank Will Never Die

October 6th, 2008

One of the difficult things of trying to share ideas, or teach a concept to large group is the different levels everyone is at. What some consider advanced others consider intermediate.

The second problem is the larger and more diverse the audience, the more general and ambiguous the examples have to be.

Ask any advanced SEO to describe what they want in a link and youre likely to get something like this

A keyword rich link from a well linked/important/popular page on a trusted and authoritative website, that is preferably topically relevant to your site

The problem is that a definition like that has so many loosely defined concepts its borderline irrelevant to someone who doesnt have some level of experience. The most ambiguously defined part of that statement is trusted and authoritative website, because theres no real publicly available/agreed upon metric for trust and authority.

Enter the page rank conundrum. If I were to tell you I need you to work on getting me at least a dozen links from trusted websites in the next 30 days, how can you be sure you met my definition for trust? If I was to tell you get me a dozen links from websites with a page rank 4 or higher, its a much more clearly defined goal.

However page rank is no longer an accurate measurement of anything. Since Google, Inc. (Goog) has admitted that they will adjust/manipulate page rank of sites they believe are selling links, and those adjustments will trickle down/out, page rank is really just for entertainment purposes.

Were back to the problem of not being able to give a quick and easy metric to teach/show people whats a trusted/authoritative website, and theres no way for them to asses accurately. Lots of experts, myself included, use the NY Times or the Wall Street Journal as an example of trusted websites. While its true they are trusted, its a cop out answer. Since the only way you are going to get into those papers is do something newsworthy (like run over your neighbor with your parakeet behind the wheel of your hummer), or have a high paid PR person on your payroll, they are relatively unattainable.

The only real answer is research and gaining experience. Use lots of other metrics, alexa, compete, technorati, quantcast, hitwise, feed burner and page rank. Look for numbers/statistics that line up and correlate. Look at the blogs in that space, see who is getting the most citations/links. Getting a good grasp of the space is not something you can do accurately just by looking at the little green pixels in your tool bar, but until one comes up people will continue to use it as crutch, because its quick and easy, and nature abhors a vacuum.

Disclaimer
when I mention page rank in this article I am referring to published toolbar page rank. I am of the belief that there is an internal page ranks value that still matters. When you hear engineers say things like page rank is still a factor in our algorthym ask them if they are talking about published toolbar page rank, and then watch as they shuffle step and avoid answering the question entirely :-)

Dotlessdomain.com - Interesting Advanced New Search Ui

October 5th, 2008

Viewzi has some interesting search UIs that I think advanced users might actually use. Unlike Cuil I dont think they spent 30 million to end up with a product that thinks the best picture…

for me is a picture of Elliot Spitzer.

One of the search UIs is called celebrity photo and heres what it turns up for Lindsay Lohan.

Heres the video search for Lindsay Lohan.

Ok so maybe your looking for something a little more serious and professional like information on disqus.com, try the information window.

Another interesting view is the Techcrunch only view.

If your music collection is short some album covers and iTunes hates you because you didnt buy if from them try album search.

its not perfect, timeline view gets a little busy for active subjects, and shopping is kinda spartan, and the recipe search is very hit or miss.

Its probably a little to complicated for the non tech savvy people. But its an interesting tool if you are in the high level broad research part of a topic, or have a need for some of the special searches it is configured for, so try it out: www.viewzi.com

Dotlessdomain.com - Urls Everywhere

October 4th, 2008

Google, Inc. (Goog) analyzes backlinks posted on web pages to calculate PageRank, which in turn influences the search results ranking of pages. But web pages arent the only places to find URL pointers. Whether or not Google, Inc. (Goog) evaluates any of these, I dont know:

  • There are URLs on billboards (some of which Google, Inc. (Goog) already stores in Google, Inc. (Goog) Street View)
  • There are URLs scribbled on walls using black marker
  • There are URLs mentioned in books (some of which Google, Inc. (Goog) already scanned as part of Google, Inc. (Goog) Book Search)
  • Besides books, theres URLs in other print media like magazines, newspapers, comic books
  • URLs are sent around in emails (some of which Google, Inc. (Goog) already stores in Gmail)
  • URLs are sent around in chat programs (and when youre using Google, Inc. (Goog) Talk, Google, Inc. (Goog) could analyze this)
  • URLs are sometimes pasted in the chat rooms of IRC (or in the 3D worlds of Second Life, Lively and others)
  • URLs are sometimes appearing in text documents, spreadsheets, presentations (Google, Inc. (Goog) knows those stored in Google, Inc. (Goog) Docs)
  • Sometimes, URLs are mentioned on web pages but not linked, like in certain news reports; also, URLs may appear in Flash files, JavaScript files and so on, some of which Google, Inc. (Goog) say they already crawl
  • URLs appear on TV in spoken or printed form; they are also named on radio
  • URLs are sometimes sent as SMS
  • URLs are sometimes talked about
  • URLs are sometimes thought about

Whether accessing any of these makes sense is another issue. Billboards would be ads, so they would probably be excluded. Links sent in emails are often spam (though Google, Inc. (Goog) has ways to find out about certain spam and could exlude those mails, or conversely, add penalty pointers to the linked pages); links sent in emails are also sometimes private; so are some of the URLs talked about, or thought about (and the latter is hard to scan with todays technology in any case). In other instances, the sample would be skewed as it would only be the Google, Inc. (Goog) property sample (e.g. when analyzing URLs in Google, Inc. (Goog) Spreadsheets but not in MS Excel files). Links in books could be more authoritative, though they might also be outdated. But sometimes, analyzing a URL outside of a web page may also give a better, because more diverse and fine-tuned, ranking.

Dotless Domain Technology - Google Gives Itself A Special Ad

October 4th, 2008

David sent in a special ad by Google, Inc. (Goog) which was different from ads you can do in AdWords, which is in contrast to how Google, Inc. (Goog) once said their “ads are created and managed under the…

…exact same guidelines, principles, practices and algorithms as the ads of any other advertiser” and that they “use the very same tools and account interface.” Now Google, Inc. (Goog) UK got back to us with the following statements:

There is a bit of misunderstanding about Merchant Search and just wanted to be clear about a few things:

*Merchant Search is an experiment whereby we are testing a new type of ad format that enables us to expose more information to users

*The AdWords blog which you link to in your blog refers to Google, Inc. (Goog) house ads. But, Merchant Search is not a house ad and we are not promoting our own property.

*The Merchant Search ad format does not compete in the auction and therefore does not affect other AdWords advertisers CPCs or Quality Score

A house ad, Google, Inc. (Goog) says, is an ad which a media platform uses to advertise one of its own products ” ie ITV using advertising space during a commercial break to advertise an ITV programme or -Google, Inc. (Goog)- using a space in the sponsored links to advertise GMail. Google, Inc. (Goog) say that any users searching for the term secured loans in the UK will see the Merchant Search ad unit. They say its a small test running against a very specific search term. No other search terms will bring up the ad unit. We will study the results of the test and make a decision what to do then.

Google, Inc. (Goog) adds that they approached a number of advertisers/lenders to see if they would be willing to take part in the test. They list these advertisers as Norton Finance, Ocean Finance, Debtbuster Loans and Chase Zengo but say that for these, there is no interface at the moment. This is a test so once the advertisers agree to sign up to the test, we do all the interface work at Google, Inc. (Goog) UK.

October 4th, 2008

One of the most popular and widely used web based e-mail, Gmail is being marred by technical issues, due to which numerous users are not able to send and receive mail.

Some of the users are being faced with a “Temporary Error (502)” error along with a flurry of other error codes as well. However, the POP and IMAP protocols have reportedly been working fine.

Over at the via:

Summary - users are receiving 502 errors when attempting to access
their accounts via the web interface. There are a few ways that you

their account. Thanks for being patient while we worked to sort out
this problem.

able to access their account. Thanks for your patience while we worked
to resolve this issue for everyone.
